San Diego Zoo Global is leading the fight against extinction—for plants as well as animals. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s plant collection contains more than 3,500 species represented by 1,750,000 specimens, and the Park serves as a USDA Plant Rescue Center for rare and endangered plant species. The varied gardens are crucial in educating visitors about the biodiversity and the importance of habitat preservation. Learn more in this fascinating field trip that takes you into the heart of Africa without leaving Southern California.

We’ll visit the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research at the Beckman Center and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In 2016, a new partnership bloomed when the Center for Plant Conservation, a network of more than 40 leading botanic institutions, moved its national office to the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. We’ll hear from conservationists how this new collaboration allows for the seamless merging of both organizations’ botanical collection planning and is significantly enhancing the efforts of both institutions, and learn how San Diego Zoo Global Plant Conservation team is working to end plant extinction within our region.

Then, we’ll head into Africa on a Tram Safari to explore diverse animals in naturalistic field exhibits and discover how horticulture staff use plants to enhance the animal areas while protecting those plants from the hungry mouths of furred and feathered inhabitants. The Park’s location and varied elevations enable it to sustain a wide variety of flora, and it has been able to maintain plants that represent geographical areas all over the world, creating a collection that few places in the world could duplicate. Our adventure will take us through animal and plant habitats at the Park’s Tiger Trail and World Gardens territories.

Lunch is provided on this tour.
