The Art of Retail and Destination Gardens: Roger's Gardens and Sherman Library & Gardens
Event Type:
Date / Time:
Fri June, 08 - 11:45am to 5:00pm
Corona Del Mar

This half-day tour is for those who like to shop or manage a garden shop. The tour will start at the premier mall of Southern California, South Coast Plaza, where we will view the unique palm collection that was acquired from the estate of Dr. A.J. Vance of Los Angeles, California, in 1986. The magnificent Cuban royal palms lining the street are just one of the notable features you will appreciate at this site. We will also take a stroll to the central plaza to view art installations, a shining example of using art and horticulture to attract visitors. We will then proceed to Sherman Library & Gardens and Roger’s Gardens, a perfect combination for shopping and inspiration. These two premier horticultural destinations in Corona Del Mar, the “crown of the Sea,” have been around for over 50 years working together and supporting the horticultural heart of Corona De Mar with its vintage cottages and stunning new houses side-by-side on flower-named residential streets. Roger’s Gardens is a destination home and garden store for customers seeking creative ideas and unique products for outdoor and indoor living. The grounds are filled with foliage and flowering plants, fountains, and authentic Italian pottery, fine home furnishings, and collectables. A landmark of Corona del Mar for more than 50 years, this family-owned business features a passionate staff to provide excellent advice and service, as well as hundreds of decorative plant arrangements designed in-house, each absolutely unique. Roger’s cemented its reputation as a destination in the 1970s when it acquired the ‘Original Disneyland Bandstand (gazebo)’ from Disneyland and moved it to the nursery. Over the years Roger’s has paved the way for many industry firsts. The company was the first to introduce signature mossed hanging baskets and in the 1980s was the permanent home of The Victory Garden television show.

In 2005 Roger’s committed to selling only organic gardening solutions. In 2007 they launched the California Friendly garden campaign, now a gardening standard in California. In 2016 Roger’s added a sustainable locally-sourced food restaurant called the Farmhouse. Located less than a mile from Roger’s is Sherman Library & Gardens, a vibrant cultural center in the heart of Corona Del Mar. Visitors can explore the nationally renowned botanic gardens which boasts over 140 species of palms from around the world, a lush tropical conservatory, artistic succulent garden, and gorgeous annual flower displays. The lush garden setting plays host to an array of festivals, programs, and art displays. Enjoy the sculptures in the garden or the permanent collection of California plein air paintings on display in the historic research Library. The Library specializes in the history of the Pacific Southwest with artifacts displayed through revolving exhibits in the Adobe gallery. The Garden shop at Sherman Library & Gardens also sells some of the historic prints from the library collections along with other artwork from local artists, books, apparel, and unique home goods. We will round out our experience by tasting the cuisine at our renowned Café Jardin featuring costal garden cuisine under the direction of executive chef Pascal Olhats who marries vibrantly fresh California produce with a French pedigree.

Lunch is provided on this tour.
