Researchers have repeatedly shown that people spend more time indoors looking at screens than outside enjoying nature and our health is suffering as a result. Public gardens are in a unique position to provide a remedy for this imbalance but are we brave enough to create programs that address this need? Three universities with prominent public gardens, Cornell, the University of Minnesota, and UC Davis, have attempted to answer that question with a series of “Nature Rx” programs. This session focuses on specific aspects of these programs and their attempts to embolden participants to push competing priorities and activities aside and embrace the simple enjoyment of being outdoors.
