Public gardens contain fundamental ingredients necessary to be sites of healing and growth. For several years, The University of Tennessee Gardens in Knoxville, Tennessee, has been the site of Therapeutic Horticulture programs with great success for participants, but also great challenges in sustaining these programs. This session will highlight successes of horticulture therapy programs for seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia, high school students with various intellectual and physical disabilities, urban at-risk youth, and a pilot program for veterans. Brief case studies on individual participants who found their voice through working with gardening and plants will provide insight into the program. The issues of accessibility, funding, and community partnerships will be presented.
